Chapter 9

Audrey!

She needs us. His wolf wouldn’t relented. At first, he pushed his wolf’s spirit aside ignoring the urge to go find her. He would see her soon enough when he picked her up later. He made arrangements for a ceremony and he wanted their first time mating to be special for her. As a human, she couldn’t sense the connection between their souls, the bond to his spirit unique to those of the ancient blood. She couldn’t comprehend how deep his soul would entwine or how much he started to love her. Most humans didn’t believe in love at first sight or predestined mates.

He would show her.

Right after he had a talk with Wade. There was no way Audrey could be Wade’s mate. She’s ours.

Yes, she’s ours, Liam assured his wolf spirit.

It took you long enough, his wolf spirit grumbled.

He pulled up to the cabin as he spotted Audrey running toward him. Throwing the truck in park and he leaped out. “Audrey. What’s wrong?”

“Liam!”

He glanced behind him, his wolf going protective. Shadows. His eyes burned as his wolf tried to come forth. His canines coming out to defend. She reached him, breathless. His eyes narrowed on the long shadow held hostage by the light where it couldn’t reach for her any further.

She ran into his arms. Instinctively, he wrapped them around her. “What are you doing near the woods?”

His wolf growled, rumbling his chest. He blinked to push the wolf from his gaze.

“Toby.” She panted. “He’s gone.” She held up the scraps of clothes. “I think he went into the woods.” She pressed her cheek to his chest, and he held her until she could regain her breath. “Liam.” She pulled back and looked at him. “I think there is somebody in the woods.”

His wolf on high alert, he placed his hands on either side of her face. He leaned in and kissed her. One touch of her lips made him quiver in both fury and lust. We will have time for this later.

He kissed her hard, they would have all the time in the world after tonight. His body thrummed with the anticipation.

“Stay here. Don’t go in the woods.” He rubbed his nose down the length of hers, capturing her lips one last time. Then he took the scrap of the cloth in her hand and sniffed it. He imprinted the boy’s scent, having already recognized it, he handed it back to this mate.

Liam started to undress and lay his folded clothes over the end of the truck bed.

“What are you doing?” Her eyes widened as she turned away from his nakedness.

“I’m going to find Toby.”

“But how will you—” she turned back and found a large white wolf. “Right. The wolf thing.”

The wolf plodded toward the forest. It glanced at her and she stepped back against his truck.

Giving his mate a long stare, satisfied she was safe, he took off into the woods. His wolf the better tracker, he gave into the spirit of his animal and went on the hunt.
